Our libraries are not just rooms full of books. We found that more than 50% of children in grade 5 still could not read at grade level. Something needed to change with early literacy in schools. Each of our libraries employs a full-time librarian who is trained in interactive teaching methods. They run daily literacy classes for students. Students from grade 1 to 5 come to the library every day to build vital early literacy skills through read aloud, songs, drawing, acting, and independent reading. The ECC libraries get books in the hands of children as well as providing them a critical early literacy intervention.
