ECC Nepal has opened 7 libraries across rural Nepali schools since 2018. Our libraries provide more than 1,000 children with access to books and vital early literacy skills.
Transforming learning through libraries
Our libraries are not just rooms filled with books — they are active learning spaces designed to transform how children learn to read, write, and communicate.
The challenge
In many rural schools in Nepal, children reach grade 5 without being able to read at grade level. We saw this gap firsthand and knew something needed to change.
Strong literacy skills are the foundation for all future learning, yet they are often overlooked in traditional, textbook-based systems.
Our approach
Today, ECC operates nine school libraries, each staffed by a full-time trained librarian. These librarians are not just caretakers of books—they are educators who lead daily, interactive literacy classes.
Each program focuses on four core building blocks of literacy:
Reading
Speaking
Writing
Listening
Daily learning experience
Students from grades 1–5 visit the library every day, where learning comes to life through engaging and participatory activities:
- Read-aloud sessions
- Songs and storytelling
- Drawing and creative expression
- Role play and speaking activities
- Guided and independent reading
- Vocabulary practice
- Writing: words, sentences, and paragraphs
Why it matters
These sessions are designed to be joyful, interactive, and confidence-building—helping children develop both skills and a love for learning.
By putting books directly into children’s hands and creating space for active learning, ECC libraries serve as a critical early literacy intervention.
They are helping students not only learn how to read, but learn to love reading—setting the foundation for long-term academic success and opportunity.
